How to secure Instagram with MFA

Let’s talk about security on Instagram with possibly the most effective measure you can implement, Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). MFA will create a notification to the account owner when someone is logging into the account.

After logging in to Instagram on your computer, press your profile photo on the upper right corner of the screen.

This will open a menu and select “Settings.”

From here, you will want to press the “Privacy and Security” section

Now scroll down until you see “Two-Factor Authentication” and select “Edit….”

You will see two options that need to be configured; check the box for “Use Text Message.”

This will prompt you to enter a phone number to send a code

Once you put in your phone number, select next to send a text message to your device

After the code is entered successfully, you are done with enabling code texting. It is always recommended to put in at least two forms of MFA for protection if one of the options is not working correctly or if you change devices.

Select the “Privacy and Security” tab again, and select “Edit Two-Factor Authentication Setting.”

Under the “Additional Methods,” select “Get Backup Codes.”

Please copy and paste these codes and store them in a secure place, such as a password manager.

Using the authenticator app can only be set up on the mobile device; enabling MFA on a mobile device will be in a future blog
